Meat and greet!

We are the Odland’s!

Our crew is five strong with Erik & Jordan along with our three littles Benik, Finn and Emilia. Erik was born and raised in Coaldale and always knew he would call Coaldale home to settle down. Me... Jordan I was born and raised in Edmonton and came to Lethbridge for school. Never did I ever think I would end up in Coaldale... mainly because I didn’t even know Coaldale existed till 2012 when Erik brought me here. We choose each other and got married in 2015 and moved to Coaldale that same year... truthfully... never thought I would live in Coaldale, but I love Erik, and I hesitantly followed his lead. Ten years later, Coaldale is the home I never knew I needed & now being business owners in it we feel deeply rooted in this amazing community.

Starting off

From a single meat stall in 1919 to a community staple

The Coaldale Meat Market was started by the Smith Family. Created as a staple to Coaldale as it was the Freezer storage to the community. Previous names: Meat Market, Johnny’s Sausage works and later named Wiebe’s Delicatessen. We have been in operations for over 40 years & we are bold enough to say our Mennonite Sausage is Famous. Our customers come far and wide to have a piece of Wiebe’s at their dinner table and we want to make that journey a little easier for them. When customers see Wiebe’s Sausage you might have problems keeping it stocked. We want to branch out of Coaldale and bring on new partners to share what Coaldale already knows... That our Sausage really is Famous.

Timeless tradition

A Century of Tradition and Taste in Coaldale

Although it was not always known as Wiebe’s Deli, the store has been around in one capacity or another for a full century and has established a legacy in Coaldale like few others could have. Back in 1919, the original deli only operated on Fridays, but expanded to a full-time butchering business three years later. Fast forward 22 years and 163 meat locker boxes were added to the business. “People didn’t have enough storage at home, like freezer space, and then they’d have a key and everything. In the back, we had lockers where they’d have all the meat and everything and [we’d] slice it up or whatever they wanted,” says Wiebe’s Deli’s Manager Margaret Froese. After another 135 lockers were added in the 1950s, the store’s ownership changed a few times before long-time employee John Wiebe took over in 1983. “With the help of his grandmother, he perfected the Mennonite sausage recipe and renamed it Wiebe’s Deli and Sausage Works,” adds Froese. Johnny Wiebe retired in 2015 and 10 years later his recipes still live on.
